Tasty Biennials

Biennials are a totally under used type of plant that create stunning blooms if taken care of and grown properly.
Many people attempt to plant biennials expecting beautiful flowers when the foliage starts to come through. What they don’t understand is that biennials do not flower the first year but grow hardy and strong through the first year and the second year they produce flowers. The seeds continue to grow more plants so they are self perpetuating and if you are patient, eventually you will have beautiful flowers every year.
Biennials will act differently if planted in unusual climates that don’t provide the normal growing season for them. They may bloom the first year or not until the third and an experienced gardener can force them to bloom when they want to by using a cold treatment.
If you are growing biennials flowers, fruits, or seeds they need to be grown for two years. However, many favorites that people don’t realize are biennials that are grown for the edible leaves or roots are grown as annuals like carrots, celery, lettuce and parsley.
