Soil 101

The key to great tasting organic vegetables is the soil in which they were grown. More specifically, the PH level in your soil and your compost.

PH is the level of acid in your soil. If it’s too high or too low your vegetables are going to taste funny. You can test the PH in your soil by picking up a PH test kit at your local hardware store, garden center, nursery or by ordering one online.

All vegetables require different PH levels to thrive, however most will do well with a PH between about 5-7.

If your PH is too high you can use organic peat moss to lower it or if it is too low try adding your favorite organic compost.   Remember, compost is the garden center, or heart.  It is what allows your garden to thrive.

You can either buy organic compost or you can make your own.

Making your own organic soil is a simple task and considering that you know everything that is going into it, making your own gives you more control over your garden and what is going into your vegetables.

You don’t need any special equipment just organic waste from your yard and kitchen.
