Forget Freddy Krueger. Jason just doesn’t cut it! There are far worse things in life Horatio, far more terrifying things. Linda Blair was never possessed. Actually, she saw the mold, in the corner of her bathtub.

Sure, molds look and smell bad. But the greater threats are the health problems they can potentially cause. Molds have been associated with allergies – (respiratory, skin rashes, runny nose, watery eyes), infections, trigeminal nerve effects – (disorientation, dizziness, attention deficit), and headache. There are some molds and fungi that can produce poisonous toxins. And you thought your spouse’s gas was bad? Fortunately, there are ways to clean up the bathroom, the refrigerator, under the kitchen sink, and other areas where molds develop.

Instead of reaching for industrial bleach or the M2A1-7 flamethrower, try using white vinegar instead. Now, I know many of you are disappointed, hoping the flamethrower would be the first choice. Vinegar may not be as fun, but at least you will have a house to come home to. Restaurants have been effectively using vinegar, to clean cooking surfaces for years. If you need to get to surfaces not easily reached by wiping them down, try filling a spray bottle and saturate the area. Let it sit. 82% of the mold strains can be eliminated, by vinegar alone. For tougher mutant molds, try two teaspoons of tea tree oil and two cups of water. Again, the smell will be strong and can linger a few days, in addition to being toxic to animals. So, tea tree oil is the last resort, when you are wanting to fight molds, without using harsh chemicals.

Another option, but not as effective as the tea tree oil, is grapefruit seed extract. The smell is better and usually does the trick. If you have kids and pets in your home, vinegar is a non-toxic option, that is a safe way to clean surfaces.
