Preparing The Soil

You may not think that the Mojave Desert and the Pacific Northwest Coast have much in common. However, when it comes to soil they may be more similar than you think.

I have found that I am running to may of the same issues here in Las Vegas as I did in Oregon.  More or less both soils are lacking most of the nutrients needed to grow those delicious vegetables.

So, I am preparing the soil here with the same things I used in Oregon, primarily organic compost, and organic peat moss along with the hard, claylike soil that is prevalent in Mojave Desert.

I also added sand for drainage, which was not something that I needed any more of on the coast.
Remember to check your PH levels and adjust the soil according to the vegetables needs. You can easily do this by adding more organic peat moss if your PH is too high or organic compost if it is too low. All vegetables thrive at different PH levels.

If you don’t have the time or energy to adjust according to each and every vegetable in your garden, a good overall PH is between 5-7.
