In previous posts I have mentioned that one way to keep pests out of your garden is by pairing plants together. You can deter intrusive insect with these herb pairs:
Tomatoes and basil: not only does the basil increase the flavor of the tomatoes, it will help to keep bird and flies away from your tomatoes.
Keep aphids off of your lettuce by planting chervil near by.
If you have a problem with ants, try planting mint. It can also deter aphids from invading your cabbage.
Pairing vegetables can also be beneficial to the overall health of your vegetables. Here are some pairs to increase the flavor of your vegetables:
Beans with cucumber, peas, and lettuce
Broccoli with Onion Carrots and Celery
Cauliflower with Celery
Eggplant and spinach
Leeks with carrots
Lettuce with strawberries or radishes
Onions with bell pepper
Potatoes with sweet corn
Squash with sweet corn
Swiss chard with Onions
Pairing is an important step to planning for a successful garden.
