This is a bit off the subject, but I wanted to start talking about organic products you can make yourself, at home. A lot of people have asked about organic shaving cream, shampoo, and the like, so here goes my first recipe: GardenMandy’s Homemade Organic Shaving Cream!
When I decided to start making homemade personal hygiene products I had a little bit of trouble finding recipes for organic shaving cream. Luckily, my Aunt was there to help. Here’s an old family recipe I learned from my grandfather for homemade organic shaving cream:
2tbsp of beeswax
2 tbsp of jojoba oil
1 cup of hot water
1tsp baking soda
2 tbsp castile soap
In a double broiler heat the beeswax and oil over medium heat until it appears clear. If you want to scent your cream now is the time to add the essential oil.
In a separate bowl mix hot water, baking soda and Castile soap. Stir until soap and baking soda are dissolved. Next, you can either pour the solution into the blender or you can also use a hand mixer. Either way make sure to mix well. After the solution is thoroughly mixed, slowly pour the beeswax over the mixture and blend well.
Pour into a container and allow to cool.
This recipe also makes for a great gift with shaving mug and brush.

When I make the cream it comes out runny like water and never thickens. Is this normal or am I doing something wrong. I used liquid soap does that make a differnce?
How long does this cream keep for? Do I need to refrigerate it or can I keep it in a container in my shower? And finally, where can I find these ingredients? Whole foods? Looking forward to trying this recipe
To Charles: Mine was runny too even though I used shavings of a castile soap bar. But, then after refrigerating overnight it became nice and thick. I was thinking, if you want to continue using the liquid soap, you could look at purchasing foamer bottles to store it in.
To Rachel Jean: You should be able to find all of these ingredients in your local health store or a good pharmacist. If not, then try online. I’m in Canada and I find the websites for Canwax and New Directions to be helpful.
Do recipes like this require a preservative since it uses water?
I have had a jar of this in my bathroom for about 4 months, not refrigerated, and it is not showing signs of spoiling. I didn’t use an added preservative. I used distilled water, I don’t know if that makes a difference or not.
I do not have jojoba oil, can I use coconut oil or olive oil?
I’ve been using almost the same recipe for a couple years new, my only difference is I use only 1/2 a cup of water and a about an oz of bee’s wax – I use liquid soap and scent it with teatree & orange oils.
Brilliant blog. People should stop rubbing these artificial scents & chemicals all over their bodies.
