Keep Birds Out Of Your Garden – Your Organic Options

One of the biggest pests that I have found in my garden are the birds. The little sparrows seem especially fearless. Sure they are cute, and only looking for food, but they can real work your garden over and ruin your crops.

There are a few organic tricks to keep them from eating your seeds. First you can build a scarecrow. I know this stirs up memories of the “The Wizard of Oz” but you can put a modern twist on it:

When I was a kid my mom found an old mannequin at an estate sale. We dressed her up, stuck her out in the yard and named her Formica. Formica definitely worked to keep the birds out of the garden. But, some people may have seen her as an eyesore.

If you are not as eccentric as my crazy mother, you can try using metallic pinwheels. The birds are scared due to the motion and light reflection.

Or you can also pick up some bird scare flash tape at any hardware store. Just tie a few strings to a bamboo stick and place close to your seeds. The breeze will do the work for you.

Quick tip: Expect that there will be a few birds that are resistant to your defenses, so it is always a good idea to plant extra seeds.

Good luck!
