It’s Been a Berry Good Year!

I love growing berries and grapes.
While I like almost all berries, I really enjoy growing raspberries. There are so many different varieties of raspberries I can’t image that there isn’t a perfect raspberry for everyone.
The only problem with these berries is how invasive they are. They will take over your entire garden in no time. My solution is to grow them in containers. You can prepare the soil exactly for your particular berry or grape and they won’t take over your entire garden.
With a bit of planning you can have a berry good berry garden!

I love my wineberries. They have taken over a portion of my yard but that is fine with me. My problem is the last 2 years the birds have eaten almost all of them
any suggestions? I am figuring I might actually have to work and install some sort of netting solution to keep them out… This is quite a bit since I would estimate that the berries cover at least 8 feet by 16 feet. I have some black berries that I have been able to protect this year (they are smaller plants and so the netting I have can provide complete coverage – of some plants). Those I don’t cover the birds still get too.
Hi John,
Thanks for stopping by! Have you tried tying flash tape or Mylar to sticks and placing them around the berries? The sun catching the Mylar scares the birds off.
I had a bit of trouble with the birds in Oregon. This method works well and is not difficult to construct. Considering you have such a large area, you may want to try this easy, inexpensive method first.
Good luck and let us know how it goes with the birds.
Thanks I will try that. It might be a problem as the morning and late afternoon their is no direct sunlight, so nothing to flash and scare them. Still I will try it. I also might try some blueberries (reading your newest post).
