Fall flowers? Most homeowners think of trees and shrubs, whenever they think of fall colors. What makes the difference between the casual springtime planter and the true planting maniac?
The fact maniacs plant year round. Yes, keeping plants and starting seeds indoors, while the snow is falling, proves you are a true planting maniac! So, for all of my fellow maniacs, this is for you. The color contrasts of fall are so vibrant, when the leaves are changing.
Adding colorful fall flowers into this mix, not only accents what is already taking place, but takes on a whole new importance. Remember Halloween is coming up. What decorations will you use? Pumpkins of course, ghosts, witches, a body hacked and strewn about the yard. Okay, maybe not at your house. But, do think of the colors associated with the decorations of Halloween, and even into Thanksgiving, when choosing fall flowers.
Some of the more popular fall perennials:
1 Aster novi-belgii (Michaelmas Daisy)
2 Caryopteris (Blue Mist Shrub)
3 Chelone (Turtlehead)
4 Chrysanthemum
5 Eupatorium (Joe Pye Weed)
6 Helenium (Sneezeweed)
7 Helianthus (Perennial Sunflower)
8 Heliopsis (False Sunflower)
9 Sedum (Stonecrop)
10 Solidago (Goldenrod)
When is the best time to plant for fall? There really is no set rule as to which is the best time, but don’t wait until late fall. If you live in colder climates, your enjoyment of fall flowers is minimized, by the weather. Some areas have extremely hot temperatures in August, and even into September. Then suddenly it’s cold. Try to find the best window for planting, when the temperatures become a little milder. But don’t wait! You may lose out, on some amazing accents to your yard.
