Go Green Baby! Watch Out For Plastic Baby Bottles.

A lot of baby bottles are plastic which means that they’re made of polycarbonate. It’s a very durable and rigid plastic, but it’s also full of Bisphenol A, and that chemical could leach right into your baby’s drink.
Hormone disruptions and even some cancers have been linked to this chemical. The National Toxicology Program even stated that there is some concern that there might be behavioral and neural effects in children and infants from this chemical.
If you choose a safer kind of plastic, however, or glass, you can protect your children from the dangerous chemicals that you want to keep out of their system. Make sure, if you buy a plastic baby bottle, that you look for ones that say they do NOT contain Bisphenol A. Bottles that don’t have this chemical in them will say so, and you can check the company’s claims and the ingredients.
If you aren’t sure or don’t feel safe with any plastic bottles, you can also use glass bottles. These are time-tested and they are completely safe when it comes to chemicals. Another way you can avoid chemicals is to switch from the standard nipples that are used to the clear, silicone nipples. These are free of nitrosamines (which can cause cancer) and they also last longer.

Is there new data to support this? The FDA recently stated it was a non problem; see this story carried by the AP:

Hi Jim, Thanks for stopping by! Canada is actually taking steps to ban most plastic water/ baby bottles because of BPA. Here is an article from the New York Times http://www.nytimes.com/2008/04/19/business/worldbusiness/19plastic.html?ref=americas
I also think it is important to point out that the FDA thinks it is okay to zap our veggies with radiation http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/26332463/
I don’t know about you, but something tells me that the FDA doesn’t have our best intentions in mind.
Thanks for stopping by and I hope to see you again.

I was worried about this with my daughter - studied up on the issue and it says the chemicals leach out when the bottle is heated in the microwave or dishwasher. grr. So far, BPA free bottles are still a whole lot more $$ than regular ones, but it’s worth it for the peace of mind.
