A lot of baby bottles are plastic which means that they’re made of polycarbonate. It’s a very durable and rigid plastic, but it’s also full of Bisphenol A, and that chemical could leach right into your baby’s drink.

Hormone disruptions and even some cancers have been linked to this chemical. The National Toxicology Program even stated that there is some concern that there might be behavioral and neural effects in children and infants from this chemical.

If you choose a safer kind of plastic, however, or glass, you can protect your children from the dangerous chemicals that you want to keep out of their system. Make sure, if you buy a plastic baby bottle, that you look for ones that say they do NOT contain Bisphenol A. Bottles that don’t have this chemical in them will say so, and you can check the company’s claims and the ingredients.

If you aren’t sure or don’t feel safe with any plastic bottles, you can also use glass bottles. These are time-tested and they are completely safe when it comes to chemicals. Another way you can avoid chemicals is to switch from the standard nipples that are used to the clear, silicone nipples. These are free of nitrosamines (which can cause cancer) and they also last longer.

  1. Is there new data to support this? The FDA recently stated it was a non problem; see this story carried by the AP:

  2. Hi Jim, Thanks for stopping by! Canada is actually taking steps to ban most plastic water/ baby bottles because of BPA. Here is an article from the New York Times http://www.nytimes.com/2008/04/19/business/worldbusiness/19plastic.html?ref=americas
I also think it is important to point out that the FDA thinks it is okay to zap our veggies with radiation http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/26332463/
I don’t know about you, but something tells me that the FDA doesn’t have our best intentions in mind.
Thanks for stopping by and I hope to see you again.

  3. I was worried about this with my daughter – studied up on the issue and it says the chemicals leach out when the bottle is heated in the microwave or dishwasher. grr. So far, BPA free bottles are still a whole lot more $$ than regular ones, but it’s worth it for the peace of mind.

  4. About The Organic Forest
We are a small family-employee owned business.
We do not farm or grow our plants in a nursery. All of our plants are carefully gathered from the woodlands where they have been planted by mother nature. One cannot get a more natural or organic product completely free from fertilizers and pesticides.
We do offer a handful of products that are “escapees” from an old farmstead (roses in particular) and we offer a small variety of heirloom seeds and other products. Everything that does not come directly from the forest is clearly marked as such.
Our native plants generally require less water and special care than domesticated nursery or farm grown plants. These unique and naturally hardy woodland plants help reduce air pollution, provide shelter and food for wildlife and many have useful human food and medicinal properties as well as beauty and scenic value.
Our gathering methods at the OrganicForest promote biodiversity and responsible stewardship of our natural heritage.
The OrganicForest is more than a family business – it is a way of life and a real place. Our 75 acres of old growth forest and a few areas of meadowland are located high in the southern Appalachian mountain range.
Contiguous to the OrganicForest are thousands of acres of woodland that has not been touched for over a 100 years. This land next to us is threatened by commercial development. This mountain forest has been purchased by a home developer. Fortunately, with the current economic climate, plans are on hold for replacing this precious wildlife area with stick homes and asphalt roads and lawns.
Thus, part of our mission: To use the proceeds of our OrganicForest wild plant sales to save as much of this incredible biosphere from the bulldozer as we possibly can.
You can help by spreading the word about our efforts on blogs and forums.

  5. You should really try to avoid plastic whenever possible, as it does leach toxins into your drink…so you should be especially cautious when infants are involved. WHY? because it truly takes a lot less “bad stuff” to hurt their little bodies, and set them up for being chemically sensitive for the rest of their lives. There are a lot of great alternatives out there, so you don’t have to be “stuck” using plastic for everything these days.

The word is catching on. Great site!
