Hi everyone,
Recently I received a question from a reader in Idaho. This sparked an obvious idea: we should start a mailbag.

If you have any questions about organic gardening please feel free to email me at mandy (at) GardenMandy (dot) com.

Dear Mandy,

Do onions need a lot of water? I’m not sure what I’m doing wrong.

Thanks,

Bill P.
Boise, ID

Hi Bill! Thanks for your email.

Here’s the answer:

My little onion sprouts

Onions need a moderate amount of water. They like the soil moist but not soggy. If you are planting your onions now, you are off to bit of a late start. Usually onions do best when started from seed, indoors, during the spring and planted after the last frost of the season.

I, however, tend to not pay much attention to when crops are “suppose” to be planted.

Sure they will do a bit better if you plant them at a certain time, but if you miss the deadline, don’t let that discourage you.
Good luck with your onions and please let me know if you have any other questions!

Feel free to send your questions anytime. And don’t forget to subscribe to future posts!

All The Best,

Mandy
