When people think of the Calla Lily they usually think of large white flowers – and sometimes they think of somber occasions like funerals. Other people think of weddings because they are used quite often in bouquets.
Calla Lilies are beautiful, come in many different colors, and can be used for all sorts of events! They are a perennial bulb, need to be planted deeply for the size or them, grow to between 18 and 24 inches tall, and provide blooms in the late spring. To get the best blooms they need to be planted in an area that gets no more than light shade; full sun is best. They do best in hardy zones that are generally frost-free, but don’t despair if you want to plant one in a colder part of the country.
During the winter months the bulbs can be dug up and stored so that they survive. Then they are simply started indoors during the cold weather and then replanted outside after the danger of frost has passed. Well-drained, rich soil is the best option for Calla Lilies, and they can handle soil that is much wetter than many other bulbs can tolerate.
Since they are easy to grow and can handle a lot of different climates with minimal extra care, and because of their beauty, the Calla Lily is a great choice for borders, flower beds, arrangements, and bouquets. No matter how you use them, they are pretty and popular flowers that will bring joy and beauty for years to come.
