GardenMandy Flowers: Snapdragons

Snapdragons are an annual that is native to the Mediterranean, but they grow well in warmer parts of the United States as well. They come in many different colors from white to bronze to purple and more.

The blooms are so profuse when the plants are doing well, that the leaves are often hidden in a wash of brightly-colored flowers. Snapdragon blooms last for a long time, making them a great plant for flower beds and borders. They usually bloom in early summer, wilt somewhat in the strong heat of midsummer, and rally themselves to bloom again in the fall. Even though they are an annual they may come back, more like a perennial, in climates that are warm enough, as will some other varieties of annual plants.

Snapdragons like full sun and they are grown from tiny seeds. However, a lot of gardeners will buy seedlings instead of trying for germination on their own, due to the level of difficulty involved. If you want to start yours from seeds, germinate them indoors and let them grow for a little bit before putting them outside.

When put outside they need only average soil and a little bit of fertilizer, and they will bloom in June, provided they are planted after the last frost of the year. They are hardy plants and can handle a heavy frost once they are well-established, making them a great choice for you if you’re new to gardening.
