GardenMandy Flowers: Roses

Grow more roses!
Roses! What better bloom to be called the ‘Queen of Flowers?’ They add joy to the lives of a lot of people, and they bring elegance to any occasion. Unfortunately, most people are too afraid to grow them because they think there’s too much work involved – but this is not really true, as long as you learn about the roses you’re planting before you bring them home and put them in the ground.
Roses were used in ancient times to help alleviate stomach and colon problems, and they were also used as an astringent. They’ve been around over 40 million years. Today they’re mostly admired simply for the way they look, although rose petals are still used in some homeopathic remedies and occasionally in cosmetics.
If you’re going to grow roses, you’ll want to make sure that they get at least six hours a day of full sunlight, or look for a variety that can handle more shade. Some roses also grow better in certain climates, so doing your research is important.
Roses also like companion plants like garlic, so planting garlic in your rose garden will help your roses to flourish. They also enjoy being deeply watered, but not every day, and they require balanced soil. If it’s too acid or too alkaline, roses won’t thrive and you won’t get the big, beautiful blooms you’re looking for.
