GardenMandy Flowers: Lily of the Valley

If you’re looking for a beautiful plant with a lot of fragrance that you can plant in all those shady spots around your yard, you need look no further than Lily of the Valley. It has smooth and oval-shaped leaves along with delicate, bell-shaped flowers and an amazing scent.

The plant came originally from Eurasia where it was used in ancient times to cover body odor – much like we would use perfume today. Even just putting a few cut stems in water can fragrance an entire room in your home. The blooms start in April and are tiny, only about 1/2 inch across.

To grow Lily of the Valley, though, you’ll need soil that is acidic, moist, and cool. It grows quite quickly if you live in a Northern climate, and slower if you live in a warmer part of the country, where it tends to clump together and not sprawl out as much.

It works well as a ground cover and has no serious issues with either disease or insects. Periodically, you’ll want to dig up the clumps and divide them so that they continue to grow and don’t choke each other out. If you do that, Lily of the Valley will thrive in many different climates with only a little bit of care, making it a great addition to almost any landscape.
