GardenMandy Flowers: Jasmine

Growing Jasmine is very easy, and can be done indoors or out. The only problem you might have is trying to determine which variety of it you like best and want to grow – or you might decide to just grow many different varieties and enjoy them all – including collecting the flowers to make tea! Jasmine has 20 to 30 different varieties and is called by some other names, depending on the area of the country or world that you live in. One thing is for certain, though – the fragrance of Jasmine is something that you will never forget. Once you’ve smelled it, it usually becomes a sought-after plant for both garden and home.
Zone 8 or higher is necessary to grow Jasmine outdoors because it needs hot and humid days and cool nights. Frost can kill it, so if you live in an area with cold winters, you’ll have to grow your Jasmine as an indoor plant. It’s very agreeable and tolerant, grows in full sun or in the shade, and also makes a great container plant, but the soil has to stay moist yet well-drained and organic matter like compost or peat moss is a necessity.
Fertilizer is also important, and if you want your Jasmine to keep flowering the key is to trim and prune it. The flowers are only produced on new wood.
