Garden Mandy’s Secret Tips For Starting Seeds
Now that you have picked out what you are going to grow in your garden it is time to plant.
There are two options when it comes to planting
- you can go to your organic nursery or garden center (online or otherwise) and buy a plant
- or you can grow from seed.
With things like carrots and radishes you are going to want to use seeds. I used a mix of the two. My herbs, tomatoes and strawberries came from the nursery, everything else I planted from seed.
Some seeds are going to need to be started either in the house or in a small greenhouse.
You can either go to the store, buy the plastic container and peat moss pods to start your seeds or you can use this nifty trick my mother taught me:
- Simply take a cardboard egg cartons and cut the lid off.
- Next poke holes on the bottom of every egg cup.
- Put some of your organic compost in and plant your seeds. (NOTE: If you keep it in the house, be sure to put a plate under it because the cardboard will get soggy when you water.)
- When it is time to transplant, cut the cups apart so they are no longer all attached to each other.
- Next, cut off the bottom of the cup so the roots can grow.
- You can plant the cardboard sleeve with your plant. (The cardboard will biodegrade into the soil.)
Using this technique helps to cut down on waste and is a great way to use left over egg cartons!
