Earthworms Work Wonders On Your Soil

They are slimy, slithery, and all around icky. They can make grown woman squeal like little girls. Men use them for bait and little boys dare each other to eat them. However, they are also your greatest ally in the garden. They are earthworms and they can turn even the most barren garden into a lush paradise.

I am sure you have heard people tell you that you need earthworms in your garden, but you may not be exactly sure why.

Earthworms are essential to the garden for a number of reasons. First they are terrific at aerating the soil. Plants need to breath and worms provide air in the soil.

Worms keep your soil loose which makes it easier for your roots to grow. This also helps your plants be able to absorb the nutrients they need. Earthworms help your soil retain moisture, which means you can water less. They help balance your PH and raise the mineral content in your soil. Most importantly earthworms provide all the nutrients that your soil needs to produce delicious veggies. They naturally fertilize your garden. If you have enough earthworms in you soil, you can fertilize less but still have healthy plants.

Your vegetables are only as healthy as your soil and earthworms ensure that you soil is loose, rich and full of nutrients and minerals.

  1. This is so true. I planted a flower garden in our new house, which had been built on a former bog. The soil had so much clay in it, I could have sold it to make pots. I used a combination of earthworms and bat guano to break up the clay. Just introducing a few worm larvae started the process and everytime I replanted the annuals, I found more and more worms. They are natures little helpers indeed!

  2. love earthworms– they really do help the soil
