In this day and age, it is common for consumers to reach for the nearest pill, product or palliative for nearly any uncomfortable condition before considering if they themselves might be causing their condition by some remediable behavior. Baldness is no different, and before one runs off to buy a box of Rogaine or other hair-growth stimulant, it would be wise to consider one’s diet and health habits first.

A Healthy Diet

The first ingredient necessary for healthy hair is a healthy diet. If you are consuming too much processed, chemical-laden food and not enough fresh vegetables, fruits, and grains, your hair is going to suffer. It might get thin, it might fall out altogether, or it might just get dry and listless, but it will suffer to some degree. In the absence of a genetic history predisposing to early hair loss, a healthy scalp will grow healthy hair…and an unhealthy scalp will go bald pretty quick.

What Makes A Healthy Diet?

What can you do to combat hair loss? Eat a healthy diet, drink plenty of water, and take a daily vitamin rich in Omega 3 Fatty acids. Also important is eating sufficient protein and consuming regular quantities of silica, a nutrient most easily gained from oats, rice, sunflower seeds, and green cabbage. Biotin, a nutrient found in high levels in eggs, salmon, and sardines, is also essential for strong hair that will not break easily or fall out due to weak roots. All of these combined might serve you much better than Rogaine by actually addressing the problems causing your hair loss rather than trying to force hair growth from an unhealthy scalp.

In the end, genetics has a lot to do with hair loss and whether an individual loses their hair at a young age. But following these simple steps can help to preserve your hair if all else is in order.

Taking care of one’s skin should be one of the most important things we do every day. Let’s face it, without healthy skin everything else pretty much falls apart, doesn’t it? Treating our skin well will prevent damage that can cause problems later as mild as more wrinkles than we would like, or as severe as deadly skin cancer. Caring for our skin now will definitely have a high payoff later.

Treat Your Skin Gently

First, remember to treat your skin gently. Harsh chemicals and painful scrubbing just aren’t necessary to cleanse the skin, especially the sensitive skin of your face. A mild cleanser is usually all that is needed, with a few extras thrown in to bring out that inner glow.

Exfoliate Your Skin

Second, exfoliate your skin regularly. A good idea is to use a gentle exfolient at night when you are not going to be applying cosmetics or other products to your face, then follow up with a mild astringent to tighten your skin and close your pores. Let the skin rest for a few minutes before applying moisturizer. Cleanse your face in the morning with mild soap and re-moisturize before applying makeup.

Use A Monthly Cleansing Mask

Lastly, treat yourself to a monthly cleansing mask to remove debris form your pores and tighten the skin. Avoid masks containing harsh chemicals, and go instead with a mild mud mask perhaps with nourishing salts included. Always follow a mud mask with a good moisturizer and a tall glass of water, as the mask will draw quite a bit of the natural oils from your skin. Using a spritzer made from lemon juice, honey, and filtered water is also soothing to the skin following a deep cleansing.

Putting your best face forward doesn’t have to be difficult or painful. It is just a matter of cleaning up your skin, nourishing it with the essential elements it needs, and being careful not to over-strip it of its natural oils and moisture. The glow within will show right through as you follow these simple steps.

Women love to be beautiful…it’s just a fact of nature. The truth is, women through the centuries have passed down their beauty secrets to younger generations often believing that their methods were the best, the purest, or the most effective means to procuring beauty. Some of these secrets are far-fetched, bordering on ridiculous, but others are worth their weight in gold in our modern world where so many beauty products are laden with chemicals, toxic substances, or at best worthless snake oil. Here are a few time-honored words of wisdom for women seeking natural beauty.

Well Balanced Diet

First, remember that true beauty really does begin on the inside and emanates from a healthy and well-nourished body. Feeding yourself properly is the first step toward natural radiance, and staying well-hydrated is equally important. Water cleanses toxins from the body and keeps the skin resilient and youthful, so it makes sense that inadequate water intake will only lead to prematurely aging skin. Adding honey and lemon to your daily diet, whether in warm tea or a n icy cold drink, will also help to cleanse the body and provide essential nutrients such a Vitamins B and C. Honey and lemon juice can also be used directly as a facial cleanser and is quite effective in nourishing the skin while at the same time removing excess oils and reducing surface bacteria that can lead to blemishes.

Essential Nutrients

It is also a good idea to consume generous quantities of cruciferous vegetables, those form the cabbage family. Brussel sprouts, green cabbage, cauliflower, bok choy and broccoli are all high in fiber high in essential nutrients, and are perfectly suited to nourish the female endocrine system. Supporting well-balanced hormones brings energy to all facets of your life, as well as enhancing your mood and sense of positive well-being.

Protect Your Skin

By the same token, making salmon and other oily fish a regular part of your diet boosts your intake of Omega 3 fatty acids, which are beneficial to everything from your heart to your skin. The Omega 3 oils help to protect the skin from sun damage, hold off premature drying and wrinkling, and bring a natural vibrancy to your face.

In the end, being beautiful does not require trips to the doctor or spending thousands of dollars at the make-up counter. All women can be beautiful and vibrant when they ca for their bodies well and project the health and vitality that begins when they care for themselves from the inside out.

Every day we use products that are advertised for helping our skin be cleaner, our complexion clearer, our chin firmer, and our eyes brighter. We use hair products that are supposed to make our hair practically grow ten times faster, shine like glass, and bounce around beautifully while never once looking messy. Add to these the various soaps, lotions, cosmetics…well, you get the idea. The problem is that many of these products are not adequately tested for safety, and some even contain chemicals that are known to carry health risks. Here are some ingredients to avoid in order to reduce your risks associated with these types of products.

Ingredients To Avoid:

Antibacterial products. Regular soap and water have been proven to work just as well, and over-use of antibacterial agents has been shown to eventually render them ineffective against infections when they truly are needed. Hand sanitizers are nothing more than gelled rubbing alcohol, which is drying to the skin and increases the likelihood of surface cuts and splits in the skin.

Diethanolamine (DEA), 1,4 Dioxane, formaldehyde, lead, and mercury are all neurotoxins and some have been proven to be carcinogenic in laboratory settings

Coal tar, commonly used in dandruff shampoos and anti-itch creams and powders, has long been known to be carcinogenic. Tea Tree oil is a safe and effective alternative. Add ½ teaspoon pure Tea Tree oil to a quart of mild shampoo and use regularly.

Nanoparticles of any substance. These are tiny particles that are so small they can actually penetrate the skin and be carried to the brain, causing damage. The worst seem to be zinc oxide and titanium dioxide, commonly used in sunscreens. Look for particles larger than 100 nanometers. Many manufacturers are now including this information on product labels.

Parabens and petroleum distillates of any kind. All are known to contribute to cancer cell growth in laboratory studies, and some are banned for use in cosmetics in Europe.

P-Phenylenediamine and Hydroquinone, both neurotoxins, are found most often in hair dyes and skin lighteners.

Unnecessary fragrances. Not only can perfumes be irritating to the skin, but many also contain phthalates, which can cause endocrine disruptions, reproductive difficulty, and developmental harm. Substitute with an essential oil instead.

Read The Labels

It all boils down to reading labels on the products you buy, and choosing to buy products that use natural elements rather than toxic chemicals. There are thousands of good products available that keep safety in mind without sacrificing the benefits the products are designed to deliver. Discovering these products and choosing them over their chemical-laden counterparts can be enjoyable and beneficial, so give it a try. You will be glad you did! Here’s to your health.

For centuries, apple cider vinegar has been a mainstay health and beauty remedy. Used both internally and externally, it has been credited with everything from killing head lice to curing cancer.

The truth about its benefits probably lies somewhere in the middle, but there are definite points to consider where its use is concerned.

Here are a few of them:

1. Apple cider vinegar makes an excellent rinse for the face, being antibacterial and astringent, yet not overly harsh or stripping to the skin.

2. It is also useful as a hair rinse, removing build-up from shampoos and conditioners and allowing the hair a “fresh start”, so to speak.

3. There are few more effective head lice remedies than Tea Tree oil combined with apple cider vinegar. Rubbing the mixture into the hair and scalp efficiently kills lice and their eggs, and enables the eggs to slide easily from the hair shaft with a comb. With the only other lice remedies on the market containing highly toxic and irritating chemicals, this role for apple cider vinegar is a great alternative for parents who have to deal with head lice in small children.

4. Adding a cup of apple cider vinegar to the bath water is soothing to the skin, inhibits bacteria, and is also anti-fungal. For those who battle athlete’s foot or yeast infections, regular addition of apple cider vinegar to the bath can actually make a difference in the frequency and severity of fungal infection recurrences.

5. Swallowing a tablespoon of apple cider vinegar before meals is said to aid in digestion and prevent heartburn. While the mechanism of this action is not clear, it makes sense that if there is already acid in the stomach when food is introduced, the stomach will not need to produce as much of its own acid in order to digest a meal. Thus, adding a small amount of acid via apple cider vinegar may alleviate heartburn and indigestion.

As you can see, there are many uses for apple cider vinegar, most of which have been tried by enough people to have some degree of believability. It is up to each person to decide if apple cider vinegar might prove to be a useful remedy for them, which it very well may be.

Try out this recipe and then see if you ever buy commercial hairsprays again!

First purchase a re-fillable pump bottle with a fine spray. Most drugstores carry them quite inexpensively. Or, save the last bottle you use of commercially prepared hairspray.

You will need these ingredients:

a lemon

two cups of water, and a

teaspoon of isopropyl rubbing alcohol.

Directions:

Cut the lemon into wedges and boil it in the two cups of water until the water is reduced by half, leaving you with one cup of liquid.

Cool the liquid and then add the rubbing alcohol.

Strain the liquid through cheesecloth ro remove any debris from the lemon, and pour the strained liquid into your hairspray bottle.

With the alcohol in the hairspray it should last quite a long time without spoiling. If your hair is particularly dry or you have a desire to use hairspray containing no alcohol whatsoever, just keep your bottle of hairspray in the refrigerator to prevent spoiling.

Add a scent!

You can also consider adding your favorite scent to the bottle, such as a few drops of lavender oil, orange oil, or even rose or jasmine oil.

Homemade Hairspray Makes A Great Eco Friendly Gift!

No one will know where you found such a wonderfully scented hairspray! This makes your homemade ecologically friendly hairspray ideal as a gift, to place into a gift basket with other bath and beauty products, or to give away as a party favor. Homemade hairspray, does it it get any better than this?

Most people who are planning to purchase a water filter system for their home are doing it for health and environmental concerns. But buyer beware, some of these high priced systems can be more harmful to your health than plain tap water.

Some common drinking water problems that filtration systems are suppose to remove include heavy metals, pesticides, solvents, rust, sediments, fluoride, nitrates and radon. That’s just a small list and already quite mortifying when you read it. There are also hundreds of harmful chemicals that are regulated under the Safe Drinking Water Act. So how can buying a water filtration system, or even bottled water, be more harmful to your health than drinking regular tap water?

Let’s start with the popular choice of the reverse osmosis home water filter. It removes all the beneficial trace minerals that are naturally found in water. Drinking demineralized water for long periods of time has been shown to create multiple adverse health effects. For example, since demineralized water is more acidic than alkaline, minerals have to be pulled from your teeth and bones to produce bicarbonate to neutralize it. This can lead to major mineral deficiencies in your body. Cancer is also a concern when the body has a higher state of acidity. There have been many studies showing that cancer grows in acidic environments.

Now let’s talk about the money aspects of a water filtration system. The prices can range from $700 dollars up to $6000. In addition, most systems have to be changed out every 5 years, some as frequently as a year. If you’re just drinking the water and not using it for all purposes like showering, consider buying a disposable filtration system like a pitcher filter you can fill and put in the fridge. They’re price efficient and convenient.

Let’s consider bottled water. Is it any safer for your body than tap? Tests have shown that close to 70% of bottled water is completely exempt from the FDA bottled water standards. This includes no prohibition against E-coli or fecal Coliform bacteria which city tap waters are regulated against. In addition, bottled water companies are not required to filter and disinfect their water like the city does.

So you decide before you buy your next filtration system. Is it worth the buck or can you save that money and take any extra vacation to a natural mineral spa and just relax about it all.
