A Hummingbird In the Hand… (picture)

Last week I was sitting at my kitchen table writing a post for gardenmandy.com when all the sudden I was jarred from my thoughts by something thudding against the living room window.

A Humming Bird In The Hand

This was no ordinary branch tapping the window. It was a very, very loud bang, like someone had thrown something. I went outside to investigate and found a tiny little green hummingbird sprawled out on the patio face down.

I felt my heart stop as I leaned over see if he was still breathing. I wasn’t sure if I should move him, so I held my breath and closely examined his tiny little body. To my extreme relief I saw that he was indeed breathing.

My husband very gently moved his wings back to his body and very carefully picked him up so we could place him in a lined box. Luckily, he rested for a few minutes and flew up into our tree where he rested awhile longer before flying off into the world. I later learned that you are supposed to gently place their beaks in the hummingbird feeder. The sucrose is supposed to take them out of shock.

So if this situation ever happens again, I will know what to do.
