No matter what you’re growing, starting seeds can be tricky; you never know which ones will sprout. But once you get the hang of it, you will start successful seeds more often than not.
Here are my 3 steps for successful seed starting:
Step #1: Seed Starters
My main secret for starting seeds is organic seed starter pods. These little discs can be found at just about any organic gardening center. Look for the ones with the plastic incubator trays.
Just soak in water until they puff up into little soil pods. Plant your seeds in the top place in the plastic tray, and walk away.
The special soil cups are loaded with nutrition for your baby seedling, and the plastic tray with cover gives your seeds a humid greenhouse environment for optimum growing conditions.
If you can’t find seed starter cups, you can make your own. Fold the seeds inside a paper towel and soak with organic compost tea. Set these towels in the sun for a few days and viola! Sprout-lings galore.
Step #2: Sunlight
Most of your seedlings will want all the sun they can get. The sun is really the reason they decide to stretch out and sprout in the first place. Use a sunny window sill, or better yet put them outside if the nights are warm enough.
Step #3: Step Away From The Sprout
Once you see a sprout, don’t get over anxious to transplant. Keep watering daily (not too much) and let nature do its work. I repeat, LEAVE THE SPROUT ALONE. When you lift up the seed starter and can see roots growing out the bottom, its time to plant this baby in soil!
Good luck with your seeds! May they sprout most of the time.
